The
unique portraiture style of Terrence Payne documents the life and
times of his surrounding peers. Relying on iconic figures and symbols
through the use of oil pastels and rag paper, Payne’s portraits
read as analogies of his subject’s history and character.
“I feel it’s
a more accurate representation of who a person is at any given time,”
says Payne. “As opposed to a rendering of their physical likeness.”
To create the drawings,
which often utilize repetitions of objects and forms, the artist
begins by sketching imagery that comes to mind when thinking about
his subject matter. The best elements of these sketches are combined
and used to create a composition.
