Letters to the Editor (Issue
22) Kudos on the PETA essay,
Jason [issue 20]. I became a vegetarian because of watching a
PETA video on animal factories. The basic concept of PETA is wonderful.
Spreading the word about where our food comes from is great. But
when they take it to the extreme they do, it makes many people
raise their eyebrows and form the opinion that the people who
run PETA are just a bunch of nut jobs. This is actually detrimental
to their goals. I always look forward to the next edition of Thirdeye,
and it makes me sad that it won't be printed any longer. Thirdeye
is a magazine for intelligent, forward-thinking people. Maybe
there just aren't enough of us in TC?

I’m writing to share with you how much I have appreciated
Thirdeye Magazine these last few years. While I’m sad that
the response to the magazine wasn’t what you hoped for,
I did want you to know a few concrete positive ways you have influenced
my life, and the lives of others around me.
I was so inspired by your Black Friday activism that I challenged
my entire congregation (The Potter’s House) to be in solidarity
with you and not shop the day after Thanksgiving. In addition,
I challenged them to spend less and give ecologically friendly
or peace & justice oriented gifts (if they had to give gifts
at all). And the two multi-week workshops (Curing Affluenza and
Unplugging The Christmas Machine) I led were all inspired by your
willingness to stand up for one small thing you believe in.
As an ethics instructor at NMC, I’m continually encouraging
my students to get out and vote (reminding them only 60% of eligible
voters voted in the 2000 election), to move beyond the mass media
veneer, to think critically about the war and issues of social
justice, and to fight the insular complacency that has convinced
people they ‘can’t make a difference’ or that
‘someone else will do it.’ Thirdeye has continually
reminded me that I am part of the change that needs to happen.
So even though this is the end of the physical magazine, please
know the vision, ideals and hopes will continue to spread and
grow in creative and even surprising new ways.

I’m Green and a member of the Green Party of Michigan because
I agree with the Green Values and the two-party system has failed
me. Being Green is a choice I made in 1996. Twice I visited a
joint meeting of the Huron Valley Greens and U of M Student Greens
in Ann Arbor. The Huron Valley Greens are both an environmental
and electoral group. I was living in Traverse City and considering
joining a Green group in TC. My first impression of the Greens
was that I liked the people, their values, and their passion;
they reminded me of the ecology class I had in high school. In
1996 there was no Green group in Traverse City. There had previously
been a local Green Party, but it did not last. Perhaps that was
because no one could vote for Green Party candidates until 2000.
Before that, Green Party members in Michigan who ran for elected
office were likely running as non-partisan, other third parties,
or as Democrats. On Earth Day 1997, I began educating people about
the Green Party here in Traverse City at a table on Cass Street
after the “All Species Parade.” By 1998 we had a group
and began holding monthly meetings.
In 2000, a state-wide petition was circulated to make the Green
Party official. Over 52,000 registered Michigan voters signed
the petition and guaranteed its success by collecting roughly
twice the signatures necessary. Previous petition drives had circulated
and failed from not getting enough signatures. I collected signatures
in Northern Michigan during each drive. Being involved with the
petition drives to place the Green Party on ballots throughout
Michigan was very fulfilling – I was becoming more and more
committed to being Green and enjoying it. Attending a Green Party
meeting is not only fulfilling and enjoyable, it is a way for
me to take pleasure in being alive. What is not to like? The Green
Values all make common sense: Ecological Wisdom, Grassroots Democracy,
Non-Violence (Peace), and Social Justice.
Greens in Traverse City are a vital part of the community and
have been part of many public gatherings. The third weekend in
August we were at a state meeting held in Boyne City. At the beginning
of the month we held an Alternative Transportation Picnic at Sunset
Park. We had a recycling team at the National Cherry Festival.
We coordinate with the Sierra Club and the Northwest Michigan
Environmental Action Council (NMEAC). You may have participated
in the Tax Day Penny Poll in front of the U.S. Post Office.
The Green Party is the third largest political party in the United
States. Greens around the world elect local and national representatives
and hold the same values whatever country they are from. If you
are interested in the Green Party you may write me via e-mail
at traversegreen@yahoo.com or go to the state website: www.migreens.org.
The Traverse Bay Watershed Greens meet at 6:30pm the 2nd Monday
of the month at Horizon Books in Traverse City. Peace, and vote
Green Party the next time you go the polls!

Ask not what the Democrats in Congress have done to stop the
war – ask what you can do to help them. The President is
colluding with foreign kings (the Saudis), his allies in Congress
are stealing public money (Cunningham), taking bribes (DeLay),
and whoring (Vitter). His top aides have either lied under oath
(Libby) or refused to testify (Cheney). His political allies (energy
and defense corporations) have formed a shadow government (Cheneys'
Energy Task Force). This Government is complete with a paramilitary
expeditionary force (Halliburton) and budget (historic oil and
defense profits). Your Constitutional rights have been suspended
(warrantless wiretapping) and your nation’s honor is being
pushed through a hole in the Geneva Conventions (torture).
By this Administration’s own admission, terrorist attacks
are increasing on their watch. A new strategy has emerged for
facing these problems – blame the Democrats! No matter that
their new Senate majority is one vote on a good day. How better
to capitalize on Americans’ rage and frustration? So you
voted Democrat in the last election, and they haven't made the
Crazy Train run on time for you? They refuse to abandon our soldiers
in the field, so you abandon them? Tell me, with what magic fucking
wand is our legislature supposed to spruce up sixteen brutal years
of war for oil?
Save your outrage for the architects of this Middle East energy
policy. Fill up your tank with gas and drive to the nearest Republican
event. Offer them your questions and your disapproval, because
I think that they need to hear it more than those who are working
daily to end this war and heal this nation.
